College Major vs. Lifestyle

Why did you pick that Major?
College, the place must of us stop in order to better our lives, yet many people I know are still in search of that better life after the degree is obtained, including myself. Not discounting the fact that many people hit their stride and find their true success without ever setting foot on a college campus. What were your motives for choosing your college major?
Does a College Major reflect your future Lifestyle?
While reading a post (Investing in Education) on Productivity501 it started me to thinking about why I picked my major (Computer Information) and if it has lead me down the path to my “ideal” life. See I picked my major based upon what I thought at the time would provide a good living, and a “good job”, which is all I had ever been exposed to. Yet during college (earlier post on my college experience) I was exposed to so many people who changed the coarse of my life and the way I thought. These people are the reason I am on my current coarse which I am pretty excited about. It’s almost like getting out of the matrix. At first I was doing what I thought one “should” in life, instead of following what I “wanted” to do and going after the life in my dreams.
College does provide results and a cushion.
I did end up with “good jobs” and I am thankful college provided me the opportunity to get exposed to that corporate world, but I have realized that my “jobs” (yes I still work) are not going to provide me with the Lifestyle and time freedom I want. This leads me to question weather I even gave any thought to what I really wanted in life before choosing my education path. I do live a great life in most eyes, but it is no where close to what I have dreamed of. I call it “my ideal life”. As I am transitioning into that life, my “good job” is keeping me going and providing the foundation for where I am going. So college was essential for me.
No matter where you start, you end up at your dream if you truly go after it.
Looking back I don’t think I new what I wanted back then. Being from a small town I hadn’t been exposed to enough to know. So through discovery and the process of elimination I have an idea of the type of life want. No matter what major I would have selected I believe I would have eventually ended up where I am now. In search of the “Good Life”, my good life. Where I have the wealth and independence to experience great things, and the time freedom to come and go as I please. Most importantly a Career I love and am passionate about. I want more then just a 9 to 5 job where I am controlled. I guess it all depends on what your true motivations are after you have experienced a few things that determine where you go. See my post on “Do you love what you do for a living?”
